Welcome Peabody Municipal Light Plant is a consumer owned, not-for-profit electric utility owned by the citizens of Peabody and dedicated to providing safe, reliable electricity and high quality service at the lowest possible rates. We are committed to the protection of our environment and to the welfare and safeguard of our community. PMLP was founded in 1891 after a long and emotional political battle was fought by the citizens of the then Town of Peabody for the right to operate their own electric business. The efforts of our Peabody ancestors resulted in legislation being passed which allowed all cities and towns in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts the opportunity to establish their own electric business. With one of the most modern and reliable electric distribution facilities in New England, PMLP's electric rates are traditionally among the lowest in the region. Unlike most municipally owned utilities, Peabody has the ability to generate its own power, if necessary, to help safeguard against widespread power outages. Service is provided to approximately 25,000 customers in Peabody and South Lynnfield . A five (5) member Municipal Lighting Commission, elected by the citizens of Peabody, governs the light plant. The Commission meets on the fourth Thursday of the month in the McCarthy Auditorium located at the light plant .
